Orientation Day!

Reality has sunk in: school has started again. I got to the college early this morning (thanks God for good traffic) to get ready to take pictures for the day, only to discover that the digital camera had dead batteries and the 35mm camera had no film. Great hey? So after a quick run to Co-op, I was quickly snapping away and charging the batteries in the yearbook office. It was a good morning, although I felt sorry for all the first years - they had a two hour lecture in the chapel!! During that time, I hung out with old friends and got my textbooks. It was so good to reconnect with everyone from before and hear about their exciting summers. And surprisingly, a lot of people I didn't think were coming back did! :) The returning students orientation was great too, since the staff knew they didn't have to go through everything again, although I did almost doze off a few times.

Afterwards, I headed to church for a video party! All the video techies (well, whoever could show up) got to watch The Princess Bride and critique it afterwards. It was really fun; I hadn't seen the movie since I was in grade 5 so it was a good chance to refresh my memory (all I remembered were the r.o.u.s. and the machine) and I learned lots about cinematography and setting up scene shots. I hope we do more of those this year, I learn so much from them! Of course, they have to be good, decent movies, not like a lot of the crud coming out nowadays... yuck.

Technical directing

Remember how on a post from earlier this month, I wrote that God could be calling me towards technical directing a team at church? Well, I didn't think it would be answered because only the evening teams need a TD, and I'm busy in the evenings with my life group. Anyways, a complete twist this morning as I came in for my shift. My own TD on my morning team quit! That was something I never would have even guessed could happen, Dan was so committed! But I guess it makes sense because he's going to take new media studies in the fall and he'll be super busy. So I guess I'm the new technical director for my team now :) Oh, and this morning's services went by smoothly again, thanks God!

Well I have work tomorrow and it's getting late. I've been working on the 100 things about me for the last few weeks now, and I finally finished it tonight, so I'll add it on my sidebar. It's not that interesting though, the fun part was more of the trying to get it together phase. And yes, I know that it will make the page incredibly long but I have that annoying problem where my pages end where the sidebar does, and I needed something to fill it :) So expect another camp update tomorrow, good night!

Quote of the month: (until I find something better)
"Community Impact needs a data entry person who knows Microsoft Outlook very well. As well a person who can help with filing. Must have a working knowledge of the alphabet. If not, training is available."
- Opportunities to Serve leaflet from the church bulletin this weekend

Hehehe! The pastor doing the offeratory preps this weekend, Greg, was saying that his 6 year-old daughter could do it if it was strictly based on the knowledge of the alphabet. Wouldn't that be fantastic?!

So many chances!

God is opening so many doors for me in all these different ministry areas! Praise God! I am so thrilled because I've been offered two chances today (two!) to be involved in tech stuff. One of them is to be involved in a film shoot for a motivational movie for teens, something my friend Justin has been working on. Another is to help out at a theatre for a stage production that's coming up next month! I can't believe it; God is basically handing me all these chances to learn and to serve :) And on top of that, I've been asked to possibly come on board and learn how to use the new editor. How incredible is that? And how faithful is God in providing for me?! I love this!!!

Running into the arms of grace...

Hospital waits suck. I'm just glad I brought my Bible along to read and that I could pray to God during those wee hours into the morning. Praise God that everything is alright though! The Great Physician never fails, never forsakes, never leaves, but is always loving, always healing and always there. Thank you Jesus. Please continue revealing Your love and holiness to the lost.

Found a poll about editing systems and which is the best of them all. I wonder though... which systems are the most commonly used? If you want, leave a comment, I'm somewhat curious now!!

Good reads: Technologies for Worship magazine and Videomaker magazine. In fact, Videomaker mag helped me pass a multimedia test I had in high school :)

Happy belated Civic holiday!

I had a great long weekend! I got to clean out my room a bit and relax before going back to work. Church was stellar :) It was a service on "whatever is lovely" and I got to technical direct it. I made a lot of mistakes on Saturday night but Sunday night went by like clockwork. Then afterwards, I went out to dinner with some techies and it was great fun. I really think I might possibly be called towards technical directing a team from now on, but I don't know how that will work since I also lead youth on Sundays, and that would not work. Something to pray about!

I stopped by the college today and found out that the yearbook is completely finished and will be ready to pickup in a few weeks and that I get to have one of the first copies :D I can't wait; the fruit of my labour will finally be ready to see! Umm next week will be busy for me, I have to start packing for camp. I guess I have a lot of things on my plate but hopefully at the very end of August, I'll be able to relax and spend more time with God and rest in Him.

I also have another dilemma: I have to help out at a golf tournament but this means skipping school. Normally, I might consider it, but it's during the first week of classes and that's when we get our syllabi and when I figure out if I want to drop a class or not, so I would hate to miss anything then! Although I technically can't drop anything since I need World Civ and English in order to graduate, so.... I also need to get my transcripts ready for the program I'm applying for. I guess I have a lot on my mind right now!

Answered prayer: Last night there was a huge thunderstorm! Thanks for answering prayers God :) Keep praying for rain, the fires aren't out yet!

Coolest idea ever...

Okay just before I have to get off the net to call Marcy, I have to post something really cool I learned today.

I feel like an idiot for mentioning this because it's probably one of the most infamous rules around but I was so amazed when I learned it (from Mike, the professional photographer, who knows a lot... and more...)!

The Hand Rule:
Whenever you are shooting something and you realize that the footage was truly incredible, worth salvaging in post-production, you shoot your hand in front of the lens. That way, when you are capturing your footage to log into your editor, you fast-forward until you see your hand. Thus (I'm in a "thus" mood today) after seeing your hand, you know it's a money shot and you rewind so that you can record that stuff. SMART! Why didn't I think of that? And why didn't I learn this sooner?!?!? Would have saved me soooo much time in editing!

Wedding blues

I just remembered that one of my friends is getting married this weekend! He invited my best friend and me, but uh... we kind of forgot to ask where it was held. Hopefully, the ceremony is taking place at our church but I could always be wrong. And hopefully I'll find out tomorrow because it's pretty dumb that I don't even know where it is! It's too bad my best friend can't make it but if it's at church then I'll definitely go. Anywhere else... probably not, since he should have told us beforehand! :)

I'm a little bored so I'm just looking at wedding websites and reading stuff about photography/videography. It's pretty helpful because next time I film a wedding, I'll know what to do better. Getting the perspective on the other side definitely helps in knowing what shots to get and how to piece everything together (thankfully I'm not editing wedding footage... yet). Anyways, this site had a bunch of great tips and definitions. Who knew photographers/videographers cost so much?!

I guess summertime is always wedding season. I estimate that by next year, I'll have about a wedding to go to each month or maybe more. I'm just waiting for a few friends to get engaged first! That's the beauty of Bible college though, it doesn't take long... it doesn't take long!

Stampede spirit!

Well I got back from the wedding. It was so cute! I didn't realize that the couple was in their 60s and that they were so charming and delightful! I had a blast and even though it was still rainy, it ended up being perfect because we got to film the ceremony indoors but the sky cleared up enough that we were able to go on the horse-drawn carriages after all! The couple also had the coolest placemarkers/guest favours; this is what it said on them:

Cowboy Bubble Bath
Directions: Cook and eat 30 minutes before bathing.

Guess what it was?! A bag full of beans! I guess it's pretty much self-explanatory :) But I loved the cowboy/western themed wedding; it definitely got me in the mood for Stampede! So I had a great day... filming weddings is one of the highlights of my summers now. I got to see the DVD from the one I did last year; it was kinda shaky with some of my scenes, but I'm learning!

Gotta go sleep. My best friend and I are waking up at the crack of dawn tomorrow. Oh and by the way, she was on TV but she wasn't on the roof; she was in the bleachers. My mistake!

It's raining, it's pouring

How does one film an outdoor wedding in weather like this? Quite the dilemma... perhaps the sun will start peeking out behind the clouds by this afternoon :) That would be so nice!

I think I just saw my best friend on TV, but I'm not sure so I'll ask her tomorrow. She got to sit on the roof of her workplace and watch the parade yesterday I think, and the camera was panning across to the people sitting on the roof and I'm pretty certain it was her sitting up there along with her co-workers.

Well must get ready for a wedding and rainy weather! Be back soon!

Vibes!

We had our viewing party tonight and it was awesome with us techies getting together to watch the New Artist Showcase to check out how our camerawork/switching/etc. looked. Overall the night got off to a shaky start but by the end, we looked good (well not us specifically) rather the artist themselves.... But yeah, our fades / cuts / blow focuses / pans / zooms / everything was seamless by the end of it. It was so exhausting though, going through 25 bands that night (at least 10 of which didn't even show up for sound check! grr...). I think it was even more exhausting though, watching what we did that night and wondering how we even survived the 3+ hours! But I'm not complaining; I'm actually looking forward to next year's awards so that I can help out again!

Well my pillow beckons me and I have work tomorrow. I have so much to do, gearing up for 7 camps next week! If I can throw out a prayer request, pray that I do not lose my mind while I'm in the middle of getting everything ready for these camps. It won't be pretty if I have a sudden nervous breakdown tomorrow but I know God will carry me through this :)

Thought of the day:
Snowmen fall from Heaven unassembled. Hmm... what does that say about the snow on this page?
