Return of the five

Today's is quite short so I'll be answering another set in addition to this one:

1. Do you like chicken? Yes please! It is one of the few meats that I actually eat and will eat the most frequently.

2. What is one food you can't live without? Bread. I was going to say pizza but I can always make it using bread....

3. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Unfortunately a night owl; I wish I could change that.

4. Chocolate or vanilla? Vanilla.

5. Are you more of a cat person or a dog person? Neither since I'm not an animal person at all. But if I really had to choose, dogs more so than cats.

And these are the answers to March 23, 2006's questions:

1) Of the various cultures, ethnicities or nationalities you belong to, which most strongly do you consider yourself?
My nationality is Canadian, my ethnicity is Chinese and my culture is Chinese-Canadian. While there have been times that I have rejected one or the other, I think I'm at a point now where I feel most strongly Chinese-Canadian.

2) Is there a culture you cannot claim heritage from but which you feel quite close to?
Perhaps French-Canadian now that I'm spending more time here but it's probably more my heart for the people than feeling like I am a French-Canadian myself. And when I read English literature and poetry, I always wonder if I wasn't supposed to be English :)

3) What's one language you wish you knew fluently?
The most obvious is French. But it would be nice to know Cantonese fluently as well; I always feel like the odd duck out for not speaking it.

4) If you could move anywhere in the world and be guaranteed a job, etc., where would you go?
I'd automatically say Montreal but Western Europe sounds really nice too.

5) If you had a time machine, and could witness any one event without altering or disturbing it, what would you want to see?
I'm fascinated by the Tudor dynasty although I cannot think of any one particular event I'd like to witness. As the stipulation said, I would only want to observe it rather than participate in it (I like where I am in the present moment).

Almost Friday

I've got the sniffles today so I'm staying at home. I was thinking about how I missed doing the Friday Five which has now actually been turned into a Livejournal community. I'll have to remember to pick this up again at some point. For fun (and sheer procrastination), I found all of the ones that I've done in the past and put them into a list, along with some questionnaires that I've answered as well.

Since I'm up...

The Friday Five, in addition to some onion-peeling. Really, too much information for one night. But tomorrow, I'll be spending the entire day working on an integrated project so if this isn't frequent posting, I don't know what is!

1. What was the last song you heard? "Someday" by Starfield

2. What were the last two movies you saw? "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "The Passion of the Christ"

3. What were the last three things you purchased? Unfortunately, this list makes me look like a total pig but it's because I didn't pack any lunches this week: Mandarin Chicken Salad from Wendy's, Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger and Biggie Fries from Wendy's, and a Value Combo from Harvey's. These were spread over a few days, although that's no excuse for all this fast food.

4. What four things do you need to do this weekend? Read, read, read, read. I guess that doesn't count. Okay, read, homework, life group, church.

5. Who are the last five people you talked to? My prof, his son, Mel, Trev, and my mom.

Apologies for writing this much about yours truly. I had no idea I could do so. That's not a good thing. Expect the next few posts to be about everything else but myself :)

Travel Alberta

The Friday Five is very prompt this week!

What was...

1. ...your first grade teacher's name?
Mrs. Hartwig - love her but I haven't written to her lately.

2. ...your favourite Saturday morning cartoon? Everything. I fondly remember Looney Tunes.

4. ...your favourite breakfast cereal? Rice Krispies.

5. ...your favourite thing to do after school? Watch TV, I'm such a media junkie. I don't know if that's good or bad.

***

I've put together a travel itinerary for a trip I'm taking when Gozo comes back from Guatemala. Here are the stops, not necessarily in order of destination but more so in importance (when I get a road atlas, I'll map it all out):
1. Torrington - The Gopher Hole Museum
2. Glendon - World's Largest Pyrogy
3. Vegreville - The Easter Egg
4. Mundare - The Ukrainian Sausage
5. Donalda - World's Largest Lamp
6. Vulcan - Starship Enterprise
7. Chauvin - Susie the World's Largest Softball
8. St. Albert - World's Largest Badminton Racket

Travel through Europe without any structured plans or time deadlines, just for the fun of it.

Maybe a 5. But I would love to take more risks.

4. What's the best thing that's ever happened to you as a result of being bold/risky?
Experiencing an exhilarating sense of adventure and seeing God's hand in protecting me.

5. ... and what's the worst?

5. Do you invest any? If so, how? I took a business class in high school. I blindly invested. There you go.

Last words

Haven't done one of these in a while, the Friday Five:

1. What does it say in the signature line of your emails?
Men do not contradict the Bible because it contradicts itself but because it contradicts them.

2. Did you have a senior quote in your high school yearbook? What was it? If you haven't graduated yet, what would you like your quote to be?
I didn't have a senior quote because with 700 graduating students, there wouldn't have been room in the yearbook. But this was the quote in my yearbook: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD , "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

3. If you had vanity plates on your car, what would they read? If you already have them, what do they say?
I wouldn't, and I don't know what they would read. But if you're into this kind of thing, here's a Vanity Pl8 Photoblog Community to check out.

4. Have you received any gifts with messages engraved upon them? What did the inscription say?
Nope, I don't think I have. The only engraved things I've received in my life have been plaques from school and those are just for stuff like "Highest Academic Standing" and "Top Academic Award". Yeah, I'm a pretty boring person :)

5. What would you like your epitaph to be?
Ooh, good question. I think I would want something like, a follower of Jesus Christ, anything along those lines. Because that is the only thing that matters in my life, and I couldn't imagine anything else to be remembered by.

The five and the quotes

I have such awesome readers!! You'll hear more about that in a second after the Friday Five:

What one thing are you most looking forward to . . .

1. ...today?

Getting more information for a road trip Lissa and I are planning.

2. ...over the next week?
Going back to school and getting back into that routine.

3. ...this year?
Going on that road trip! It'll be a once-in-a-lifetime vacation for us (two years in the works!).

4. ...over the next five years?
Finishing all post-secondary education and moving into the workforce.

5. ...for the rest of your life?
Serving Christ and others in ways I can't even imagine.

***

So, about my fantastic readers. I just wrote a post on singleness that has been in my head for the longest time and I received great responses to it.

Sarah gave me a quote that I just love:

"I'd say that the truly worst times to be single are not when everyone around you is dating, but when you are least willing to accept the challenges that God gives by not dating. I'm not even speaking about vocation- but rather, accepting the time alone to grow stronger and be happy with yourself (primacy of love should always be with God anyway). I can't say this is a general truth that makes everyone ecstatic with life, but it's my experience, and I embrace it readily now."

And Lance imparted some helpful advice:

"The only people who look upon singleness unfavourably are those who are discontentedly single themselves. Don't even bother being annoyed or bothered by them, it's honestly not worth your time. You might want to point out to them, however, how unattractive it is when someone is discontentedly single. If a girl can't handle being the beloved of Christ, I'm not about to subject her to my imperfect love." (Yes, yes, yes! This is so very true!)

Scott and Christy: I agree with you both, being single is great! There should be no shame in that! It is the most intimate gift that God has given us: this precious time to devote all of ourselves to Him, getting to know Him better and to love Him more. And Michelle, that experience is all too familiar. It's too bad that other students in Bible colleges can't see how wonderful singleness really is. We'll just have to get the message out, won't we :)

Happy Boxing Day!

Wow! I just want to say thank you to Michelle for sending me a handmade scarf! It looks beautiful and it was such a great Christmas surprise! I love it and I'll be sure to wear it when it's snowing around here. I used to end up getting lots of tiny trinkets as gifts in high school. But it's so much nicer now because I get gifts I can actually put to use. My best friend ended up getting me something I've needed for so long and it is so nice! I feel so very blessed! Thanks you guys!

Friday Five:

1. What was your biggest accomplishment this year?
Hmm, getting a 4.0 GPA :) Figuring out what program I'll apply for next year. Working at the Vibes. Lots!

2. What was your biggest disappointment?
That my mom got diagnosed with cancer. That put a damper on my year.

3. What do you hope the new year brings?
Physical healing for my mom. And that my parents' hearts will be softened to God.

4. Will you be making any New Year's resolutions? If yes, what will they be?
I always try to make them, but I never actually follow through with them. But for next year, I'd like to read through the Bible again and to get back into shape now that my knee is doing better.

5. What are your plans for New Year's Eve?
I don't know. I'm not sure if there's anything planned for youth that night (I don't think there is), so I might just spend the night at home.

I never go shopping on Boxing Day; it's utter chaos! If you did, I don't know how you possibly survived it. Remember that Christmas is more than just material possessions and sales!

Friday Five:

1. List your five favourite beverages.
Milk, iced tea, smoothies, milkshakes, water.

2. List your five favourite websites.
Boundless, Gospelcom, Dayspring, RadioU, my life group's blog.

3. List your five favourite snack foods.
Chips, yogurt, strawberries, cheesesticks, bananas.

4. List your five favourite board and/or card games.
Scrabble, Cranium, all the card games I played at camp this summer, that should cover the rest :)

5. List your five favourite computer and/or game system games.
I don't play computer games or game system games. I haven't played the original Nintendo games since I was in grade six so I can't really answer this!

I'm back!

It's been such a discipline for me this last week to not blog. Granted, I still replied to comments and commented on other peoples' blogs, but it was pretty tough on me. It did help me to devote more time to studying for my finals though (as I should have been doing). So, as you can see on the checklist below, I only have 1 final exam left and my youth resource files to finish. Then I'm free...!

This means I'm a bit late with my Friday Five:

1. Do you enjoy the cold weather and snow for the holidays?
Winter has always been my favourite season, with the glittering snow and the crisp frost in the air, but now that I drive, I like clear streets more :)

2. What is your ideal holiday celebration? How, where, with whom would you celebrate to make things perfect?
My ideal holiday celebration... well, my Christmas is never complete without our annual youth Christmas parties and our life group Christmas parties now. My perfect Christmas celebration would be when my parents become Christians and they understand the true meaning of the season, so that we could all celebrate the birth of Jesus together as a family for the very first time.

3. Do you do have any holiday traditions?
We usually put the tree up every year, but this year, with my mom feeling sick and all, we haven't been able to. Umm, I also need my annual supply of Ferrero Rochers :)

4. Do you do anything to help the needy?
The youth has a Seed Christmas dinner every year and I usually go to those, but I missed this year's to spend time with my mom. I also try to put together the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes but I always miss the deadline, so this year, my life group and I tried Operation Backpack. I would love to do more for the needy, but it shouldn't be limited to just the Christmas season.

5. What one gift would you like for yourself?
I don't know. I have everything I would like already (I'm a very blessed person, thanks God!). I guess I would just like for my mom to get better and for her cancer to disappear completely.

Tardiness pays off

Friday Five:

1. Do you like to shop? Why or why not?
I like shopping for other people for their Christmas gifts. I'm not a big shopper though. I don't mind going shopping with friends but it's mostly for the time spent together rather than buying anything.

2. What was the last thing you purchased?
I don't remember. Probably some fast food to eat.

3. Do you prefer shopping online or at an actual store? Why?
I prefer shopping at an actual store because then I get to examine the product before I purchase it.

4. Did you get an allowance as a child? How much was it?
I did, but only for a while. I think I got a buck a day or something like that, provided I did my chores, which was not often.

5. What was the last thing you regret purchasing?
I regret buying so much fast food - Wendy's, Harvey's, A&W's, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, etc. - this year. Oh, I'm going to be paying for that....

It's that time again

Friday Five:

1. List five things you'd like to accomplish by the end of the year.
The end of 2003? Get A's in all my courses. Get the yearbook going and have at least a quarter of it finished. Get back into shape. Read all the books on my reading list. Learn how to take care of my soul.

2. List five people you've lost contact with that you'd like to hear from again.
Bonnie. Diana. Amanda. Kelly. Karen.

3. List five things you'd like to learn how to do.
Play the guitar. How NOT to procrastinate. How to be more disciplined in all areas of my life. Use the Avid. Crochet better, actually how to do all arts and crafts better.

4. List five things you'd do if you won the lottery (no limit).
This is assuming that it was won without gambling right ;) Donate lots to my church and other churches. Donate lots to charities. Donate lots to all my friends going into full-time missions. Create more scholarships for my college to help all of us who are broke (including myself!). And the rest for a cure for cancer.

5. List five things you do that help you relax.
Sleep. Hang out with friends. Read. Listen to music. Hang out at church.

Happy Birthday Lisa!

Friday Five:

1. Using one adjective, describe your current living space.
Cozy.

2. Using two adjectives, describe your current employer.
Don't have one currently so I'll describe my employer from this summer: honourable, creative.

3. Using three adjectives, describe your favourite hobby/past-time.
Innovative, challenging, fun!

4. Using four adjectives, describe your typical day.
Restless, packed, strenuous, joyful.

5. Using five adjectives, describe your ideal life.
Blessed, devoted, committed, adventurous, exuberant.

I am going to have to figure out how to post titles in this program. I quite like using it so far but I need titles!

First day of reading break!

Friday Five:

1. What food do you like that most people hate?
Hehe Lissa gets stuck with this every time I eat out with her. But I absolutely love mushrooms and black olives, two things she can't stand (nor anyone else I know for that matter)!

2. What food do you hate that most people love?
I do not like cucumbers. Pickles, on the other hand are delicious, but cucumbers? Or watermelon. Or kiwi. I like to stick to traditional fruit.

3. What famous person, whom many people may find attractive, is most unappealing to you?
A lot of the celebrities in the media nowadays. I don't understand why people have crushes on celebrities that have no substance as a person but may just look "hot" or whatever. It's pretty irking when I hear people drool over them when there's nothing to drool after!

4. What famous person, whom many people may find unappealing, do you find attractive?
I can't really think of any because I don't easily find people attractive. In order for me to notice them, they'd have to be a person of integrity and selflessness. And not that no one fits that criteria, it's just that it's extremely rare for famous people to have. But if it was someone other than a "celebrity", I'd say people like Billy Graham. I don't think of them in the "attractive" sense, only that they emulate Christ in their lives and they share His love with the world.

5. What popular trend baffles you?
Frankly, everything (although I'm sure that there's one or two things I haven't thought of). I don't really go with the trend at all. What baffles me the most though? That Christian girls feel they have to dress skimpy in order to look cool. I see this at church and Bible college all the time, and I don't get why immodesty is such a trend.

Friday Seven and a Goodbye

I'm not doing the Friday Five because I don't celebrate Halloween (pagan roots) so I'm doing the Seven from Gerrard's blog. Friday Seven:

1. Who is someone you look up to?
Besides Jesus? :) I really look up to Mel, my life group leader from high school. She is such an incredibly godly woman who has inspired me so much!

2. When you leave this world; what do you want to be remembered for?
My love for Jesus and for others, and that I committed my whole life to Him doing His will.

3. Are there any regrets?
That I didn't come to know Jesus sooner in my life. But really, I don't have any regrets because God is in my life and that has changed everything.

4. Ephesians 4: 17 (The message) tells us to not to be going along with the crowd, the empty-headed mindless crowd. How are we to avoid this then?
I try my best to remain strong in maintaining my biblical convictions no matter what. I have uncompromising values and I strive to be a person of integrity and character, so that I can hopefully be an example to others. The worst thing you can do is not stand on any ground and sway along with the crowd.

5. On a scale of 1 - 10. One being the lowest; and ten being the highest ...where would you say you are in your walk with God?
Well I won't be a 10 until I get to heaven, but everyday I want to grow closer and closer to my Lord. I still feel like a 1 because there is so much I have to learn and I desire to have a stronger walk each day.

6. What version of the Bible do you use most?
Fan of the New International Version here! The first version I read was the New American Standard Bible (most accurate from the Greek text). The Message is okay for freshness.

7. What is one or two sayings ...you would use or say ...hey; that would make a great slogan; retreat theme or T-shirt motto?
Hmm, good question! I'd like to see this verse upside down on the back of a t-shirt: "and they turned the world upside down" - Acts 17:6

***

So I'm heading off to a youth retreat this weekend. It should be fun although extremely freezing. I should go pack some warm woolies and lots of socks! I'll be back on Monday to write about everything. In the meantime, have a great and blessed weekend! I really appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to read what I write and I am honoured by that. Bye!

Grounded in faith

I've been so down and out lately; sorry my blog's been a bummer to read. But today, after hearing our TA teach in class about the Mormon religion - somehow I felt so re-energized. That was one of the best lectures I've been to in my life. The fact that it was in Cults class seemed a little strange, but wow, talk about a way to get people back into the Word. I have an even stronger desire now to be so grounded in my faith in Christ and my thirst for reading the Bible has come back. I want to be absolutely sure of what I believe in so that I can never lose the foundation in my life. What a blessing my morning turned out to be!

Friday Five:

1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones?
I barely have time for TV now. I used to watch the World Cup. And of course, the Olympics when it was on. I think the video editor wants me to watch football though so I can learn to be more creative for editing.

2. What/who are your favourite sports teams and/or favourite athletes?
Sports teams - go Stamps and the Flames! Athletes? I used to be really into figure skating when I was younger so I loved Kristy Yamaguichi and Michelle Kwan. I don't really follow athletes.

3. Are there any sports you hate?
Can't think of any. I'll get back to this when I think of one.

4. Have you ever been to a sports event?
Yep - I remember the first football game I went to with my youth group. My best friend and I had tickets in a different area and these old creepy drunk guys kept talking to us... eeech.

5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play?
I used to be on the soccer team - it was only for a year though. And believe it or not, I was in skipping club all throughout elementary school (is that a sport?). I was in badminton club too. Boy, I did a lot of stuff until I busted my knee playing basketball at the beginning of high school. Sadly, it still hurts like heck. I was going to be on the soccer team this year too but I'm way too busy with youth.

Oh yeah, please pray for my mom! She's been feeling really sick for so long now and next week, we're going to the hospital for some tests. Thanks!

Tardiness

I am awake... finally! But I, being the blog nerd, realized that I forgot to do the Friday Five yesterday.

1. What vehicle do you drive?
A Toyota. I don't feel like mentioning what exactly just in case you've seen me drive :)

2. How long have you had it?
It's not really mine but I'm able to use it.

3. What is the coolest feature on your vehicle?
My snazzy tape deck, oh yeah.

4. What is the most annoying thing about your vehicle?
Can't really think of anything. One of the vents is broken, but that's not much.

5. If money were no object, what vehicle would you be driving right now?
The one I have now. Exactly the same... only I'd change the colour.
